Book Review: We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

I had the opportunity to get a good deal on the deluxe edition of this well loved YA Mystery book. Now that’s a combination which I almost never read, but I was tempted and it was a short and easy read. So why not 🤷🏻‍♀️

This book follows the story of 4 teens who are privileged enough to spend their summers on a private island. The book was some what fast paced and had an unexpected twist which were the only two things really going for this book.

There were a mix of broad themes like family drama, romance and mystery which I felt were dealt with at a very superficial level. The story mainly revolves around one main character and how she is trying to putting all the pieces together after an accident. The character building was flimsy in the book.

I disliked all four of the main characters and the entire Sinclair family. Some of them were consistently evil which was a relief. But most others were all over the place. After finishing the book I also found my self wondering how the title of the book is apt to the title in anyway. It was not.

Now it wasn’t like I didn’t enjoy this book at all, it was a fast paced read and I was gripped to know what the secret was. Which is why I gave the book 3 stars. But after finishing the book I felt that there was absolutely no point in reading the book. It was not something which made me say woah that story is sticking with me. If the book was any longer then my rating would have been different.

If you are into a good mystery which is also an easy and quick read but don’t actually have a very high bar for the quality of writing then go for it. It doesn’t take over 3-4 hours to finish this book. But if you aren’t into YA or Mystery and only read these genres occasionally like me then you can easily skip this one.

Rating – ♥♥♥/ 5

i read this book when it first came out, but didn’t really love it at all. Didn’t love the writing style and the story was meh! And i hated all the characters. The book cover is the only thing i liked about the book.
