Book Review: How to be a Bawse? by Lilly Singh

How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life by Lilly Singh

Published – March 28th 2017

I have been watching Lilly’s videos for over  5 years now and when this book was about to be released, I honestly didn’t consider buying it at first. My thoughts: Self help? I am a happy person and I am capable enough to help my self, I really do not need this book in my life. But, watching Lilly’s excitement I caved in, I wanted to understand the buzz. So, I took the first step and purchased the book, this made me happy as I technically supported her and my job was done.

It took me 4 weeks to finally get to the book and I was still skeptical if I wanted to prioritize reading this book over the very famous #bookstagram book Pachinko which was a new release and had all the characteristics that my favorite book needs to have. I am a person who re-reads catchy phrases and makes a mental and physical note of quotes I like. This book had plenty of them. The book itself was a very easy to read book, the chapters are well written, had the right amount of motivational content to support the stories/anecdotes. After reading the book half way, I was telling my husband about how my respect for Lilly Singh had increased because she was a real “Hustler” and a very hard working person, in the end I did learn a little bit more about her and I was motivated to be a better version of myself. I do not think that the cause of the feelings were the book or the writing it self but was more to do with the story behind the writer.

My only complain would be that 50 chapters/guidelines are way too much for a person to remember, unless I read and re-read the chapters over and over again there is no way I could remember all of them. Also, some of the chapters like Be Active seemed too obvious. But again, I feel like the intention was not for everyone to start doing absolutely EVERYTHING that the book guides you to do. I feel like it was intended to take in what you could relate to or what inspired you the most, practice it and then add it onto your hat as a shiny new unicorn feather.

My favorite chapters in the book are Get Uncomfortable, Schedule Inspiration and No Piggyback. Oh and before I forget, this post and restarting this blog in full swing is me “Getting Uncomfortable”. Thanks for the inspiration Lilly, I got goosebumps every time I watched your vlogs and the crowded went crazy cheering for you. It felt good that a woman vlogger has achieved everything that you did today.

No matter what you are doing in your life, even if you are at the best phase of your life professionally, personally and emotionally you need to read this book. I am sure you will take away at least 5 learning’s from this book and be motivated to do what you are doing better.

My favorite quotes from the book,

“WARNING: This book does not include hopeful thoughts, lucky charms, or cute quotes. That’s because success, happiness, and everything else you want in life need to be worked for, not wished for. In Lilly’s world there are no escalators, only stairs. Get ready to climb”

I love the fact that this is on the back cover of the book, it shows how this book is all about content and not fairy tale endings.

“Don’t just try to pass your classes; try to ace them. Don’t just aim to pay your bills; save to travel. I don’t want you to write a script just to see a movie get made; I want you to win an Oscar. That’s the difference between settling like a survivor and conquering like a Bawse”

Although, there are many more things in the book that I’d like to highlight, I want to stop here and recommend all of you to read the book. It is not my go to genre but I want to go back to reading it again, and I do not think I will regret it if I do.
